A Legendary Class Returns to Hoorn
After five years of waiting, the moment has finally arrived – the Tempest World Championship returns to the waters of the IJsselmeer at WSV Hoorn. From August 16-23, 2025, the world’s finest Tempest sailors will compete for the coveted world title.
The Tempest, designed more than 50 years ago by Ian Proctor, continues to prove why it remains one of the fastest open keelboat classes in the world. This iconic boat made history when its prototype dominated a series of selection trials in the Netherlands, leading to its recognition as an “International Class” in 1965.
The pinnacle of this success came when the Tempest was selected as an Olympic class and first competed in the 1972 Olympic Games in Kiel – a testament to the exceptional performance and popularity of this remarkable class.
WSV Hoorn has already proven to be an outstanding host venue. Our first World Championship in 2010 was a tremendous success, creating unforgettable memories for competitors from around the globe. While the originally planned 2020 championship had to be postponed due to Corona, we are now ready to once again demonstrate why Hoorn is the perfect location for this prestigious event.
Experience every moment of the championship action with live tracking provided by Sportvolgen. Follow all races in real-time as the world’s best Tempest sailors battle for position on the IJsselmeer. Whether you’re watching from shore or following from around the world, you won’t miss a single tactical move or position change.
We expect 28 to 35 participants from countries where the Tempest class maintains a strong tradition, including:
